Lazarus Hawkins was born in Stokes Co., North Carolina,the son of William Hawkins 1750–1804 and Nancy Tilley 1772–1828. He had four siblings: Elenore “Nelly” Hawkins 1785–1869; Elizabeth “Betsy” Hawkins b.1788; Nancy Hawkins 1800–1865 and Joel Hawkins 1800–1871. After Lazarus his father died, his mother married Jesse Simmons. By an order of the court Jessie became guardian of the five young children she had with first husband.On Dec 31 1816 He married Margaretha Elizabeth “Betsy” Petree, in Stokes Co., NC. Records of their marriage can be found in the county court at Danbury NC. His Bondsman was Henry Petree. She was the daughter of Johann Henrich Petri and Margaretha Barbara Magdalina ZimmermanThe thirteen children of Margaretha Petree and Lazarus Hawkins were all born in Stokes Co., NC: Alexander Hawkins 1818–1822 and Dolly Hawkins 1819–1822, they died as small children; Willian H. Hawkins 1820–1883, in 1847 he married Lucretia Padgett in Stokes NC., and died in Rogerville, Hawkins Co., TN.; Henretta Hawkins 1821–1822, she died when she was about one year old.; Solomon James Hawkins 1822–1892, on Feb 7 1845 he married Mary James in Stokes Co., N.C. records at County Court in Danbury, NC.; Noah Hawkins 1827–1912, on Nov 17, 1847 he married Elizabeth Padgett in Stokes Co., N.C. bondsman Rewben T Moore, Witness C H Nelson, Bond #000139197, he died in Smyth Co., VA.; Emily Ann Hawkins 1832–1898, On Jan 6, 1860 she married William M. There, they all lived as neighbors. They all attended the St. Clair’s Bottom Church. One sad day in the year of 1855, the family gathered at the church for the funeral service of their dear beloved Wife, Mother and Grandma, Margaretha Elizabeth “Betsy” Petree Hawkins. She was buried in the Churchyard Cemetery.Before the 1860 census most of the family had moved to Hawkins Co., TN, near Rogersville. Lazarus was 75 and only had two children at home, Roman 14 and Ellen 4, but by the 1970 census he had remarried to Polly Ann Helton a spintser from Rogersville.Lazarus died at the home of one of his sons, Roman McNeil Hawkins in 1875 in Persia, Hawkins, Tennessee. He was buried in the Persia Cemetery #15.
